Fair Trade Standards

Fair Trade exists not as a charity but as a practical campaign to change the way the world trades and ensure the producers at the bottom of the trade chain are paid a fair price for their work. It also prevents them being exploited and forced into unsustainable and dangerous work practices.

The Fair Trade standards stipulate that traders must:

pay a price to producers that covers the costs of sustainable production and living;

pay a 'premium' that producers can invest in development;

make partial advance payments when requested by producers;

sign contracts that allow for long-term planning and sustainable production practices.
